You’ve got to be thinking: isn’t one inspirational, sensitive, meaningful, caring, profound movie starring Robin Williams enough for one year? At least, could we keep it down to twice a year? At present we’re getting them at a clip of one every other month and it does seem a tear too much. It was only back in October that we had to endure the lachrymose but juvenile spirituality of What Dreams May Come. Now there is the almost equally awful Patch Adams, directed by Tom Shadyac from a screenplay by Steve Oedekerk, supposedly based on the true story of Hunter, “Patch,” Adams, a medical student at the “Virginia Medical University” who challenges that institution’s authority, as represented by the evil Dean Walcott (Bob Gunton), to go on turning out soberly scientific, dispassionate doctors, humorless men like Walcott himself, detached from the lives of those they treat. The monsters! The film begins in mental hospital, where the pre-med school Adams has checked himself in because he feels suicidal. His roommate, Rudy, is afraid to get out of bed because of marauding squirrels.
After trying to convince Rudy that the squirrel is an amiable beast and, even if there were lots of them there in the room with them (which, by the way, there are not), they would not hurt him, Adams breaks down and joins Rudy in his delusion, convincing him that the two of them are waging war against the imaginary squirrels with imaginary weapons. It does Rudy good and it does Patch good as well, since it teaches him that he can help people by flattering their delusions. An important lesson for con-men and politicians, perhaps, but maybe not the best, we cannot help thinking, for doctors.Likewise, the “genius” Arthur Mandelson whom he meets in the nut-house teaches Patch another dubious lesson. His own delusion is the “genius syndrome” that comes from “constantly digging into the creative potential of the human mind.” As one of the asylum’s attendants puts it, “Maybe he dug too deep.” Now he goes around holding up four fingers and asking newcomers “How many fingers?” When they answer, “Four,” he shakes his head and says, “Another idiot.” But he teaches Patch that if you squinch up your eyes and look beyond the fingers you will find you are seeing eight, and that‘s the right answer. The idea is “to see what no one else sees”—which, if nothing else, is at least a likely lesson to be learned in a booby hatch.Whether we want doctors who have learned it to be treating us is of course another matter, but somehow seeing four fingers where there are four fingers is associated here with the nasty Dean Walcott’s desire to “train the humanity out of you.” Patch, fortunately for him, is in little need of training of any sort. Like Arthur Mandelson—or, by the way, the hero of Good Will Hunting, another movie which makes a parade of Mr Williams’s now-famous sensitivity—is a genius who apparently never has to crack a book in order to finish top of his medical school class.
That, at least, is Hollywood’s idea of genius. So he has plenty of time to spend in the hospital playing games and telling jokes to cheer patients up. He insists that this is good medicine, that patients “share their fantasies” with him.Later he gets Mandelson to bankroll a rustic clinic based on these principles, as a free hospital where he and his fellow hippie docs can treat people with humor. “There will be no bosses,” decrees Patch, who is the boss, and “the aim is love.” Far out! To staff his clinic, he manages to charm his initially hostile med-school classmates as he has already charmed patients and nurses and, doggone it, just about everybody save curmudgeons and skeptics like me. Of course he suffers an appalling tragedy along the way. It wouldn’t be a Robin Williams role without one.

But in the end he triumphs over Dean Walcott (as we knew he would) in a ridiculously implausible courtroom scene. So much for the “centuries of experience” which have made medical training what it is.
America’s most famous medical-doctor clown is a funny guy with a serious prescription for transforming our health — individually, as a nation and as cohabitants of our planet. For those interested in holistic approaches to health and healing, Dr. Patch Adams’ message is particularly resonant.A few simple, sensible ideas provide the bedrock of Dr. Patch Adams’ philosophy, and they offer possibilities worth considering for anyone interested in health: Take responsibility for your own health. Be related to other human beings as members of the same community. Employ any healing technique that works. Give people the gifts of compassion, listening and time.
And while you're at it, have some fun, why don’t you? He’s not the Patch Adams you’d recognize from Robin Williams’ melodramatic portrayal in the movie that bears his name. For one thing, he’s a foot taller and serene, with eyes that alternately sparkle with mischief or become pools of lamentation as he reflects on the suffering that is both his grief and his life’s mission. For another, he’s not just a goofy guy in a clown nose tweaking the beard of hospital administrators who try to rein him in. A rabble-rouser and social activist, Adams has devoted 33 years to challenging the health-care system in the United States — a nation where millions of physically sound, well-fed people are miserable in mind and spirit, and where even more millions suffer from self-inflicted diseases he believes could be healed by the medicine of meaning.A Life of Meaning.
In his seminal book, Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl writes that what is authentic and genuine in humans is our desire for a life full of meaning. When our lives suffer from a deficit of meaning, the vacuum creates much emotional and physical mischief. The doctor’s task, Frankl says, isn’t to bury the symptoms under a mountain of medication, but to pilot the patient through the crisis and assist him in remaining on the path to his own growth and development. Adams’ clowning is a means to this end.
His goofy antics serve as psychic dynamite, employed to disintegrate the granite of our inhibitions, which keep us from connecting with ourselves and with each other. Patch Adams’ Prescription for Your HealthThe first step in being healthy is to have a genuine, loving compassion for yourself, Patch Adams says. The Health of a Ha-HaAlthough humor itself is difficult to evaluate, the response to humor — laughter — can be studied quite readily. Research has shown that laughter increases the secretion of the natural chemicals (catecholamines and endorphins) that make people feel peppy and good. Resident evil revelations 2 corepack mega. It also decreases cortisol secretion and lowers the sedimentation rate, which implies a stimulated immune response. Oxygenation of the blood increases and residual air in the lungs decreases.
Heart rate initially speeds up and blood pressure rises; then the arteries relax, causing heart rate and blood pressure to lower. Skin temperature rises as a result of increased peripheral circulation. Thus, laughter appears to have a positive effect on many cardiovascular and respiratory problems. In addition, laughter has superb muscle-relaxant qualities.
Muscle physiologists have shown that anxiety and muscle relaxation cannot occur at the same time and that the relaxation response after a hearty laugh can last up to 45 minutes I have reached the conclusion that humor is vital in healing the problems of individuals, communities and societies. I have been a street clown for 30 years and have tried to make my own life silly — not as that word is currently used, but in terms of its original meaning. “Silly” originally meant good, happy, blessed, fortunate, kind and cheerful I emphasize being goofy so most of the humor is at the expense of the giver.— From Gesundheit! By Patch Adams, M.D.
To some, Adams’ antidote may sound unconventional or hopelessly utopian: a health-care system where laughter, joy and creativity are integral to the healing process, where all health practices are equal and where the cared-for as well as the caregiver form the medical community. It’s the kind of do-what-works medicine Adams and a handful of colleagues practiced for 12 years in a pilot project that has morphed into the Gesundheit! Institute, an organization dedicated to addressing the “spiraling costs, dispirited caregivers and alienated patients” in the U.S. Health-care system. The nonprofit Gesundheit! Institute was created to provide for the realization of a dream Adams and his cohorts had when they first began practicing medicine in the 1970s — a holistic hospital and health-care community where care is provided without cost and doctors carry no malpractice insurance. The Institute has never accepted third-party reimbursement and never will, Adams says. Doctors and patients relate to each other on the basis of mutual trust, and patients receive the gift of time and listening from their physicians.
Initial interviews with patients are three or four hours long — an unimaginable luxury in a world where most of us spend a harried 15 minutes trying to explain our symptoms to a doctor who is conscious every minute of the ticking of the clock. The refusal to carry malpractice insurance is part of what Adams calls the “politics of vulnerability.”“Malpractice lawsuits reflect the breakdown in the relationship between the patient and the doctor,” he says. “Medicine is imperfect, and sometimes mistakes happen.
But studies have shown that the least-sued doctors are those who are closest with their patients. In a community that feels like family, one doesn’t punish a physician’s honest mistakes.”The Gesundheit!
Institute has broken ground for a healing facility on its 317-acre West Virginia property. The intention is that the facility serve as a model to stimulate the medical community to examine viable alternatives to the current system. It will be a 40-bed community hospital, with 60 beds for the hospital staff and their families. A cornerstone of this model, Adams says, is that all medical approaches will be welcome — as long as they don’t charge for the service.
Herbalists and specialists in acupuncture, massage, Reiki and nutrition will work alongside medical doctors to discern the most effective approach for each individual patient.“To provide a context that will promote wellness, we fully integrate medicine with crafts, performing arts, agriculture, nature, education, recreation and social service,” Adams says. “We don’t think depressed and anxious people need prescription antidepressants; they need to find their own love of life.“This (approach) makes some medical doctors very nervous,” he says. “In 1971, when we founded our first hospital, we were the first hospital in the country to incorporate these things. We believe that all healing methods are valid and that massage and acupuncture and herbs and whatever else works are completely equal with the work of the physicians in their importance to the patient. It isn’t about the doctor — it’s about the patient.
The first law for doctors is to serve the patient first. Within that framework, why shouldn’t we be willing to share the stage with whatever works? The reason there aren’t other hospitals that incorporate all these complementary therapies is that they’re chicken doo-doo, afraid to make the doctors mad, afraid to alienate the medical establishment.“Our radical approach does make it very difficult to get funding,” he says.
The project remains a work in progress, and Adams’ lectures and public appearances provide most of the financial nourishment for its growth. Institute in West Virginia.A Quest for New LeadershipFor much of the past year, Adams has been on the road campaigning for U.S. Presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich, a candidate whose value system, he says, most closely mirrors his own. Adams’ passion for individual health is indivisible from his belief in the necessity of public policy that supports the web of life and creates a peaceful world in which human beings can relax with each other and enjoy the fruits of community.“Everything in medicine is secondary to getting leadership in the world that makes the health of the planet its priority,” he says. “We aren’t like the cockroaches and ants and rats — we don’t produce a million babies a year to replace ourselves when conditions get too harsh for survival. We have to have leadership throughout this world that realizes that solving our problems can’t be done through guns and murder and violence and exploitation.“If we don’t have that kind of leadership and those priorities, none of the healing modalities, none of the diets or techniques or practices we concern ourselves with will make a bit of difference,” he says. “We have to stop dealing in death and destruction and start creating political and social structures that are healthy for the earth and all that inhabit it, or we’re all sunk.”It’s a tall order, and a perfect challenge for one who seeks a life overflowing with purpose and meaning.
The quest for a healthy, peaceful world has taken Adams to prisons, orphanages and nursing homes, as well as on extended journeys to war-ravaged parts of the world where economies and infrastructures are practically nonexistent. On these trips, he takes tons of food, stacks of clothing and a goofy troupe of clowns causing spontaneous eruptions of healing giggles in some of the most miserable spots on Earth.Kathryn Compton is editor in chief of Herbs for Health. I remember the first time I saw the movie Patch Adams, starring the late great comedian Robin Williams. It moved me to tears, not just because it was such a powerful film that addressed a major issue plaguing our world (the shameful state of health “care”), but also because I knew that what I was witnessing was actually based on a true story.SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEOThe late Robin Williams on the left & the real Patch Adams on the right. For those who haven’t seen the movie, the story is about a man who commits himself to a mental institution because he is suicidal. While there, he learns that the doctors are not truly concerned for the well-being of their patients, which then this inspires Patch to enter the medical industry with the revolutionary approach of making health care free and available for all.More than just making it free, however, Patch believes that patients should not be treated conventionally, but psychologically and spiritually; by making them feel love, laughter, friendship and safety, in spite of whatever disease or condition they may have. He does this by dressing up as a clown and using humor to connect with patients.Unfortunately this choice is met by great opposition by the authorities who are hostile towards his unorthodox ways, and Patch must also navigate personal pain and loss during the process.
The story is incredible. So if you haven’t seen the film, I recommend checking it out.Afterwards I couldn’t help but wonder, who was this great man who pursued his convictions in spite of intense opposition? What was he doing now? And was his story accurate, as Hollywood is well reputed for entertainment and propaganda, rather than reliable history. This is what inspired me to research the real Patch Adams.“In one year when I was 18, I was hospitalized three times because I wanted to kill myself.
Nature Of The Human Person
I didn’t wanna live in a world of violence and injustice. And in the third hospitalization I had the realization, you don’t have to kill yourself, you can make revolution.” — Hunter ‘Patch’ AdamsHunter Doherty “Patch” Adams is one of the most remarkable human beings I have ever discovered, and I’m not one to easily be impressed. He has been engaged in his vision of free health care with love for over 42 years now, and during this time has even worked additional jobs to bring in additional income to ensure his vision of helping those in need does not die.The Gesundheit! Institute has since gone global and expanded to more than 70 countries around the world, including Syria, Afghanistan, Palestine, Russia, Haiti, Sri Lanka, and a number of other places in the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia.Patch Adams with Syrian refugees and a fellow clown worker inside a refugee camp/ Photo Credit: Nora RowleyDuring this time, Patch has traveled abroad 250-300 days a year — for over 28 years — and hasn’t been home for longer than 2 weeks in a row. He also having been at somewhere around 10,000 death bed’s of the sick and elderly, and holding several thousand children on the same day that they died from starvation WOW Just wow.Photo: IDeA FoundationAs an activist myself, this man’s sacrifice (which I can almost guarantee he would never call it such, as what he does comes purely from a place of love) is humbling. The feeling of holding someone as they pass from this life to whatever may be next is one of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to personally do, and this man has done it literally thousands of times. He throws himself into the darkest reaches of pain and injustice in our world, and reaches out to the most needy and oppressed among us. In spite of all his obstacles, he still pursues his vision and conviction without compromise.Patch is undoubtedly one of the greatest activists in history, and the only reason why he is not recognized as such, is presumably because he openly frowns upon the government, mainstream media, big pharma, and the military industrial complex. As you listen to his TEDx talk below, listen carefully to his words.
His presentation style is not comparable to the powerful charisma and propaganda of a seasoned politician — since his energy has been invested in actually helping the world, rather than ruling it — but he does share great insights from a unique perspective that should command our attention; If you are interested in supporting Patch Adam’s Gesundheit Institute, you can follow them on Facebook, or visit their website to volunteer or donate.Written by, Founder ofFind me also on;All my work is open source and I encourage it to be reproduced.
